Hindi bababa sa 21 katao ang namatay kabilang ang dalawang bata at mga dayuhang turista, habang ilan pa ang nasugatan matapos mahulog sa tulay at magliyab ang isang bus.
Ang bus ay tumatakbo sa pamamagitan ng methane.
Sinabi ni Mayor Luigi Brugnaro sa kaniyang social media account, “A tragedy has struck our community this evening. It’s an apocalyptic scene.”
Ayon naman kay Luca Zaia, gobernador ng Venice region, “The provisional toll is at least 21 fatalities and over 20 people hospitalised. It is a tragedy of enormous proportions.”
Dagdag pa niya, “Efforts are on to extract and identify the bodies. The victims and the wounded include people of several nationalities, not just Italians.”

Sinabi ng isang opisyal ng city hall, na kabilang sa mga namatay ay Ukrainian tourists habang iniulat naman ng Italian news agency na ANSA na may namatay ding German at French citizens.
Ang bus ay pabalik na mula sa isang makasaysayang lugar sa Venice patungo sa isang camping site nang mangyari ang aksidente.
Samantala, nagpaabot na ng kanilang pakikiramay sina Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron at European Union (EU) chief Ursula von der Leyen.
Ayon kay Meloni, “I am in contact with mayor Luigi Brugnaro and (Transport) Minister Matteo Salvini in order to follow the news of this tragedy.”
Sinabi ni Salvini na maaaring ang sanhi ng aksidente ay ang biglang pagsama ng pakiramdam ng tsuper ng bus.

Ayon sa pahayagang Il Corriere della Sera, ang bus ay lumihis sa tulay, humampas sa barrier, at nahulog malapit sa riles ng tren mga 30 metro (100 talampakan) sa ibaba.
Nakasaad pa sa ulat, na ang bus ay nagliyab matapos tumama sa mga linya ng kuryente.
Sabi ni Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, “The aggravating factor was methane and the fire this spread rapidly. I fear that the death toll will rise.”
Pahayag naman ni German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, “I was deeply saddened by the terrible bus tragedy. In this night of grief, my thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.”
Ayon naman sa isang tagapagsalita para sa German foreign affairs department, na nakikipag-ugnayan na ang kanilang embahada sa Roma sa mga awtoridad sa Italya upang alamin kung may German nationals nang kasama sa mga nasawi.
